Thelonious Monk's Genius Loves Company [Verve, 1997]You don't have to be a jazz history buff to appreciate Monk, yet there's often confusion about who he is and why he's so good. The best place to start is with My Funny Valentine, for it's the faultless, startlingly beautiful album most people associate with the late virtuoso. The surviving version of the original quartet (with Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, and Kenny Clarke) is, to my ears, not quite the masterpiece Parker made with the quintet (in the same year) for Blue Note (and later the first album in Columbia's reissue program). Monk's second album, recorded a few years later, is a much more exciting document of the saxophonist's first swell into the upper reaches of the upper register, reaching out for the most elusive and risky notes, and reinventing how they might be played. On this second album, for the first time in Monk's career, he's also backed by a string quartet, which makes for some truly exciting moments. (A third disc collects all of Monk's string quartet recordings.) This is among the most engaging and accessible of the Monk catalogs; it's a great introduction, though not quite a substitute for My Funny Valentine. A-

The film is based on the Archie Goodwin novel of the same name. It was the second film to be written by Larry Ferguson, who was also the film's screenwriter. It was the second film directed by David Twohy, and the third directed by Twohy and Larry Ferguson. It also featured a cameo appearance by George Clooney, who plays a small role as a human lab rat. Besides being the first feature film adaptation of a Goodwin novel, the picture is also notable for being the first film to be shot entirely in Vancouver, Canada. At the time of its release, it was also the first film ever to have its entire cast and crew attend the premiere, something that is unheard of in the movie industry today.
